one could certainly debate whether or not there is any sinister motivation behind this system. some might say that amazon's reviews are there to encourage others to buy products, not give unbiased opinions, and therefore high reviews serve their purposes better. you could also argue that the language behind the scales is arbitrary, and that amazon may have just chosen that language based on other factors. whether or not they had some reason to intend it, amazon's ratings are higher than others by design. if we compare the process of reviewing books at amazon and goodreads, there's a big difference in how the ratings are presented. on amazon, selecting any star level prompts the ui to tell you what that review means. on goodreads, you have to hover over the stars for a second or two to get a tooltip with the suggested rating interpretation. right off the bat, amazon's system goes farther to make the 5 star scale less subjective and have clearer defined meanings.

the whole point of user reviews is they are opinions from unbiased users, so they give you confidence to buy or avoid products you're considering. did the gadget break shortly after the warranty expired, or did the product not work as expected? an ad won't tell you that, but a review will. watch out for sloppy grammar

...full size image finally, we found gender differences in fake news detection. in particular, it appears that females detect less fake news than men. in supplement table 6, we show that interest in politics cannot explain these gender differences. what appears to partly explain these gender differences is confidence in one's ability to detect fake news. we found in supplement table 7 that women who are more confident in their ability to detect fake news are particularly unable to detect fake news in the uk, but not in germany. another possible explanation could lie in the unique role that emotional processing may play in susceptibility to fake news as found by martel, pennycook and rand33. there is some evidence of sex differences in emotional processing34, although these conclusions are disputed and may be highly gendered (see for instance shields35). future research should go deeper into the psychological mechanisms behind our results and explain the sociodemographic differences in fake news detection and sharing that we have highlighted.
